THE POLICE DEPARTMENT is looking for people who are flexible enough to handle the challenging responsibilities of a modern police officer.
The City of Orange is a changing, growing, thriving city which is constantly improving services for all its citizens, offering all the opportunities of a small town. Orange is situated at the extreme eastern boundary of Texas on the Sabine River, and is close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to give it many of the aspects of a coastal city. Orange is the county seat of Orange County and is heavily industrialized by the oil/chemical and forest industry.
OPPORTUNITIES:
TRAINING: Each new non-certified officer is enrolled in a 16-week course of basic instruction at the Regional Police Academy at Lamar University. Subjects vary from police procedures to law, human relations, first aid, and driving training.
ADVANCEMENT: Promotions to Captain are determined by competitive examination.
EDUCATION: Orange Police Officers are encouraged to continue their formal education. College tuition reimbursement is available.
SALARY The beginning salary for a trainee is $3,059.00. Police Officer's salary ranges from Grade I at $3,494.00 to Grade VII at $4,359.00.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS Orange Police Officers receive 10 holidays, 15 sick days, and 10 to 20 days of vacation per year depending upon length of service. Up to 2 weeks summer camp military leave with pay is available each year for those who have not satisfied their military obligation. All Orange Police Officers enjoy the job security of State Civil Service. The City of Orange pays 100% of employees' hospital, dental, and life insurance, and it is extended to dependents at reasonable rates. Basic uniforms and equipment are furnished to each police officer. Orange Police Officers are required to work a 12-hour shift schedule with time and one-half for overtime. Police Officers are compensated for off-duty court attendance. All police officers receive longevity at the rate of $4 per month for each year of service, in addition to their salary. The City of Orange participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) at a 7% two to one contribution rate.
